Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortified places in Europe. With a long rich history as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress, it is alive with many exciting tales. When you climb Castle Hill, you will walk in the footsteps of soldiers, kings and queens – and even the odd pirate or two.
Though parts of it remain in military use, the castle is now a world-famous visitor attraction. It’s also an iconic part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site.
Enjoy the feel of an old fishing village which the suburb of Cramond still retains. Completed with a quaint row of whitewashed houses, the small sandy beach is a popular choice with Edinburgh residents as well as tourists who head here to walk and cycle on the beachside paths. It’s ideal for a family day out or simply a relaxing stroll and offers splendid views of Firth of Forth.
There is plenty of history to see in the area too with Cramond boasting one of the longest known periods of human settlement, and refreshments are available at the nearby pub or the nice coffee shop.
It’s also possible to walk over the causeway to the island at low tide and visit what remains of the World War II fortifications, as well giving you one of the best views over the Cramond shorefront, the Kingdom of Fife, Dalmeny Estate and in the distance Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat. Do keep an eye on the tides though as it is possible to get stranded on the island.
Home to over 1,000 rare and endangered animals, Edinburgh Zoo is packed with fun and un-zoo-sual things to do. Why not visit the world’s only Knighted penguin, Sir Nils Olav? Or spend your day learning about brilliant birds, mischievous meerkats, super strong sun bears and more with daily keeper talks! It’s only a 5 minute walk from our Stag’s View Lodge property
Hidden in a collection of historic buildings dating back to 1595, at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, the Witchery is steeped in centuries of rich Scottish history.
Enjoy legendary Edinburgh fine-dining, an award-winning wine list, and the most atmospheric dining rooms in all of Scotland. Step inside and be transported to a bygone era.
